Philip Seymour Hoffman Funeral: Celebrity Friends Brave Cold to Pay Final Respects

Philip Seymour Hoffman had a send-off befitting an actor's actor as dozens of the most famous celebrities in the world turned out on a frigid Friday morning in New York to say their goodbyes.
 
Joined by Hoffman’s family, mourners gathered at the historic at St. Ignatius Loyola Church on Park Avenue on the city's Upper East Side for the funeral. The location has witnessed the final rites of several dignitaries and stars, including former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in 1994, singer Aaliyah's funeral in 2001, and singer/actress Lena Horne's funeral in 2010.

Among those in attendance: Joaquin Phoenix, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Amy Adams, Julianne Moore, Laura Linney, Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Charles, Josh Hamilton, John Slattery, Justin Theroux, Vanessa Redgrave, Brian Dennehy, Michelle Williams, Mary-Louise Parker, Billy Crudup, Sam Rockwell, Bennett Miller, Ethan Hawke, Spike Lee, Ellen Burstyn, Marisa Tomei, Ashley Olsen, Bobby Cannavale, John Patrick Shanley, David Bar Katz, Diane Sawyer and Mike Nichols, Chris Rock, David Zayas, and Louis C.K.
 
Before taking their seats, the mourners offered condolences and hugs to Hoffman's longtime partner, Mimi O’Donnell, and their three children — Cooper, 10, Tallulah, 7, and Willa, 5.

On Thursday night, many of the same celebrities attended Hoffman’s wake at the Frank E. Campbell funeral home in Manhattan. A public memorial is being planned for later this month. No details about the memorial have been released yet.
 
Hoffman died from a suspected heroin overdose last Sunday morning. His friend playwright David Katz found Hoffman in the bathroom of his New York apartment with a needle in his arm. The Oscar winner was 46 years old.

"We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone," read a statement from his family. "This is a tragic and sudden loss and we ask that you respect our privacy during this time of grieving. Please keep Phil in your thoughts and prayers."
